PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS
(Refer to the color worksheet throughout)
Adding water to the outdoor paint will ruin the durability and breakdown the sealer that is in the paint. Since this canvas will not be displayed outside, using water to moisten the sponge painter and the brushes is permissible.
Background:
Moisten the larger sponge painter with water wring out well. You want the sponge to be slightly damp not wet. Load the round side with a touch of Cobalt, using a back and forth motion and starting at the top of the canvas start to fill in the sky. Use a very light pressure to keep the color transparent and light. Add a little pressure to vary the color in some areas. Pick up more cobalt on the round edge of the sponge, using more pressure than was used for the sky; drag across the canvas once to paint the horizon line and then using a back and forth motion and a little less pressure; fill in the water area. Rinse the sponge and then load with Linen; fill in the beach.
Sun:
Double load the #12 Flat with School Bus Yellow and Wicker White, using the flat side of the brush and keeping the School Bus Yellow to the outer edge; paint the sun. Flip the brush to add a touch of Wicker White to the top edge of the sun to highlight. Use the corner of the brush to add a yellow reflection in the water.
Clouds and Waves:
Load the 3/4” Flat with Flow Medium and then add Wicker White to one corner of the brush, using the flat side of the brush and keeping the Wicker White side up; paint the clouds. Using the same brush and color but staying on the chisel edge add a few waves to the water and a reflection of light from the sun.
Palm:
Double load the 3/4” Flat with Burnt Umber and Linen, using the flat side of the brush and keeping the Burnt Umber side downward; paint the trunk of the palm starting at the bottom and making the segments progressively smaller as they near the top. Double load the 3/4” Flat with Thicket and Fresh Foliage, using the chisel edge of the brush leading with the Fresh Foliage side; paint the main spines for the fronds. Using the same brush and colors paint the leaves for the fronds.
Sea Oats:
Load the 3/4” Flat with Burnt Umber, add a touch of Linen to soften the color slightly. Using the chisel edge of the brush; pull the stems for the sea oats. Use a little pressure to make the strokes wider and to indicate leaves. Still using the same brush and staying on the chisel edge; paint the sea oats by touching on the end of a stem and flicking the brush out and away.
